As the oldest of five children, Michael grew up knowing the value of hard work, perseverance, and education. His father worked as a welder to support the family, and Michael put himself through school—earning his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Texas and a graduate degree from Villanova. Over the past 30 years, he has held leadership roles in the health and vision industry, including VSP Vision and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota. Today, he divides his time between Minneapolis and Florida, proud of his three adult children and grateful for the opportunities he has had to build both career and community.

Discovering MICC

Michael’s connection to MICC began through a friend and deepened after attending an MICC Gala. “The participants’ joy and pride were so moving,” he recalls. A subsequent campus tour with CEO Amy Gudmestad confirmed his impression: MICC is life-changing. “The participants were so enthusiastic about their programs. It was clear that MICC is providing opportunities for people to live independently and thrive.”

Why He Gives

Though Michael does not have a direct personal connection to autism, he has family members with learning differences and has long supported inclusive employment initiatives. For him, MICC’s mission aligns with his values and professional commitments. “Helping people live and work independently is one of the greatest contributions we can make,” he says.

Michael is especially inspired by MICC’s College program, which prepares participants for independent living and meaningful employment. “The ability to help people gain confidence to live independently and to have meaningful careers benefits the individual and the community.”

Looking Forward

Michael has attended galas, graduations, and tours, and he plans to deepen his involvement in the years ahead. He sees MICC’s partnerships with local employers as a key strength and hopes to see the organization continue to expand. “The more people MICC can help, the greater the impact.”

A Life of Values

Raised by parents who, despite limited means, always found ways to help others, Michael has carried forward a philosophy of giving back. “Every day I think about how I can positively impact people—at work, with family, or in the community.”

To those considering their first gift to MICC, his encouragement is simple: “Get to know MICC. See the impact for yourself. Once you do, you’ll understand why your support matters.”

“Michael embodies the spirit of MICC’s community—someone who leads with heart, invests in possibility, and believes in the potential of every participant,” says Amy Gudmestad, MICC CEO. “We are grateful for his partnership and the example he sets for others.”
