family At MICC

MICC wants all young adults to thrive and have sustainable independence – families play an important role in that.

Every journey to MICC is unique. It’s safe to say, however, that as the parent/guardian or trusted adult of a neurodivergent individual, you’ve been highly involved in your emerging adult’s schooling. MICC is not a traditional college, and we recognize that you are not a typical college parent. MICC wants all young adults to thrive and have sustainable independence. We realize that families play an important role in that. At MICC, family members are embraced, receiving support and resources as unique members of our community.

Thoughts on Family

MICC participants share how their family relationships have evolved since attending MICC’s College program and the importance of family in their adult lives.

”Before MICC, my son didn’t interact with his peers and had difficulty navigating friendships. It fills my heart to hear him talk about his friends at MICC.”
— Jill, MICC Parent (at the MICC Gala)

What to Know about your New role

As your emerging adult finds their way in independence and career, your role will shift and MICC will be there for you in your transition as a supportive loved one in your emerging adult’s life. Here are 9 things to know about your role at MICC:

Trust the process.
We’re not asking you to let your MICC participant go, we're asking you to let them be. MICC is a safety net as they explore who they want to be. You will play a part.
Have a positive attitude.
A part of trusting the process is embracing the unknown. You’ve been parenting long enough to know kids pick up on your emotions. Your positivity will have a siginifcant impact.
Give them space.
There will be ups and downs as your MICC participant begin to explore their independence. They need space to make mistakes, meet friends, take public transportation...
We have resources for you!
When your first-year MICC participant has their orientation, you will have yours, and a plan for what to expect in that important first year.
You have a community here, too.
Who can better understand where you’ve been and how you’re feeling as you drop your emerging adult off at College than another parent/ guardian/trusted adult?!
We want you to come back.
Families are welcome to attend many MICC events — homecoming, gala and more. These are great opportunities to build community with other families and to check in with your MICC participant!
You will hear from us!
MICC participants are assigned an Advisor, and they are your point of contact at MICC. They will be in regular communication with you.
You will continue to learn.
Because MICC has a Community program, you will have the opportunity to see what independence looks like at different life stages and learn from parents of older MICC participants.
Share MICC.
There are other neurodivergent adults and families that need MICC! Join our social networks and share the MICC story with your community. Who knows who you could help!
